PEACE BOAT WELCOME EVENTS

PIRAEUS, 16 SEPTEMBER 2016

 

The Observatory of International Organisations and Globalisation (PADOP), an NGO closely cooperating with the IPB and the United Nations, being currently very active on peace and disarmament issues, is preparing several manifestations to welcome at the port of Piraeus- Greece the Tokyo- based Peace Boat which is realizing its 92nd Global Voyage for a world free of nuclear weapons.

The PB is arriving to Piraeus with a group of Hibakusha on board. This group will be specially welcomed by Greek government as well as local government Officials in Piraeus and Athens. In particular, following a short ceremony at the port, the group of Hibakusha will

be received by the deputy Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, prof. Tassos Kourakis as well as by the Foreign Minister, Mr. Nikos Kotzias. Subsequently, the group will pay a visit to Plato’s Academy and the welcome events will culminate with a Peace Concert at the Great Hall of the Piraeus Port Authority. The Peace Concert will include freedom and solidarity songs by famous Greek composers, such as Manos Hatzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis.

After Piraeus, the Peace Boat will visit the Santorini island, a famous tourist destination, where the Santorini mayor will welcome and address the peace activists and the Hibakusha.

On the occasion of the PB’s visit to Greece, PADOP has invited Mr Colin Archer, General Secretary of the International Peace Bureau (IPB) to participate in the programmed peace activities.
